Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It may sound like an odd name for a room, but the mud room is actually an important space in your home. When it comes to rooms in a house, the mud room is only a cursory glance, but it is definitely a place you visit several times a day.
most overlooked room in a house
A mudroom is often overlooked when designing homes because it doesn’t seem like much of an investment compared to larger rooms like the kitchen or living room.
The mud room is a place where you take off your shoes and store them before entering the house. It is also a place that can store any other items like coats, bags and sports equipment. Mudrooms provide convenience and protection from dirt and mud, snow or rain. This gives you a place to wipe your dirty shoes on a mat or rug before coming inside the house.
You can even make it in the laundry area like we did. This way, this is where dirty and wet clothes get left at the door and can be cleaned. It helps in keeping away the dirt and wetness that normally comes and keeps our house clean.
As an added upgrade, we included a washing station, storage for sporting equipment, and other miscellaneous items (like outdoor items and wet umbrellas).
Benefits of having a mud room
The mud room is a great way to keep the rest of your home clean. This is a great entryway for the family coming in from the attached garage that has everything you need for the outdoors.
It’s nice to be able to take off your shoes and not track mud all over the house, especially if you have white carpets or are concerned about polished hardwood floors.
Many people don’t have garages, so most of what they keep is brought into the house through the back door after they’re out. Having a place where you can take off dirty shoes, wet boots or other outdoor gear will help keep your living space clean.
The mudroom is also a great place to store all of the kids’ sports equipment, jackets and bags. Doing so means they will never have to go looking for their soccer ball again. Having a dedicated space where you can provide storage space for all their outdoor items is a huge advantage of having a mudroom.
Advantages of combing the mud room and laundry room
Having your mud room as a room in the laundry room is a great way to cut down on extra home space while also making it a designated spot for all the dirty stuff. In other words, it’s a dumping ground for the family home.
mudroom basics
So what do I keep in the mudroom? Here is a list of mudroom basics.
- shoe rack and shoe storage
- coat hooks or pegs
- umbrella stand or holder
- laundry hamper
- bench or seat
- Cabinet for storing umbrellas, rain boots, and other seasonal items
Umbrella stands or holders are one of the many things that can be done with a mudroom. Our main goal was to provide a place where we could store our shoes and wet coats, but we achieved much more than that!
mudroom upgrade
Here are some ideas for other things you can add to your mudroom. Let these help inspire you as you design yours:
- Locker for each family member
- closets
- Storage Bins and Baskets to Keep Floors Clear
- a bench or piece of furniture
- mudroom countertop workbench
- washer and dryer
- hanging rack for clothes
- utility sink off for washing up
- A shoe cub. (If you have a place where you can keep shoes, consider adding a cubby for each member of your family.)
Of course, these are just personal preferences. Talk to your family members about what they want. For example, no one wanted bench seats in our house, but we all wanted heavy-duty hangers on the wall so we could hang our heavy coats when winter came. Another thing was the laundry area that had counter space to wash laundry when we were done.
What should be the things in the mud room?
Some of the most important things in a mud room are a mirror, hooks to hang coats and bags, shelves for storage, and a mat or rug to wipe your feet. You can also include a coat rack with space for hats, gloves, scarves and other items.
Your mudroom should be open and inviting. This is not a space where you want to feel closed in or cramped, so make sure there is enough room for people to enter the room without bumping into each other. You may also want to include benches or chairs where family members can sit while taking off their shoes.
Why should you have a mud room?
A mud room is an investment that will pay off in the long run. It provides convenience and protection from dirt, snow or rain by wiping one’s feet on a mat or rug before coming inside the house. It’s also nice to be able to take off your shoes without finding dirt everywhere or going out the front door.
What are mud rooms used for?
The mud room is used as the primary entry point for the family. It is a place where you take off your shoes and store them before entering the house. It is also a space that can be used for storing any other items like coats, bags and sports equipment. Mudrooms provide convenience and protection from dirt and mud, snow or rain by wiping one’s feet on a mat or rug before coming indoors.
Where is the mud room located?
The mud room is usually located at the entrance of the house, either at the back or side door. This can be the entrance to the attached garage or the back door where household members come in from the back porch.
How do I customize my mudroom?
A mudroom is best customized with storage options that are organized and easily accessible. There are many different types of customization to choose from, such as benches, cabinets, cubbies, and hooks.
A bench is a great way to add some extra seating while storing shoes, bags, or any other items you want to store.
Cabinets are a great way to organize supplies like cleaning tools, equipment, or sports equipment. An ideal cabinet includes cabinet doors with closed compartments on top and open shelves on the bottom.
Mudroom cubbies and hooks provide great, simple storage options for the kids’ school bags and outfits—that way, they can’t be brought into the rest of the house.
What do you think about mudroom?
I love our slime area feature so much that I’m actually looking forward to upgrading to one in my home soon. I’ve started gathering the items needed to renovate it and looking online for the best deals on extra features like coat racks and benches.
The mudroom is very convenient and cool! In fact, they’re probably one of my favorite rooms in the house now because they help keep the rest of the house clean.
