keep it personal

Instead of buying expensive wall art from a store, consider making your own wall art. Not only will this save you money, but it will also add a personal touch to your home. If you’re not a great artist, you can sign up for one of those guided paint nights. (They’re surprisingly easy.) Other options include framing scrapbook pages, photo collages, shadowboxes of collectible or heirloom items, or prints of your own poetry and other inspirational sayings.

If you enjoy landscapes, consider enlarging that sunset or mountain range photo from your last vacation. Isn’t it time to start actually using all those photos? No need to keep them somewhere on your phone’s camera roll or memory card!

rearrange and search again

Rearranging your furniture is essential if you are living in a house for a long time. You may think that you have rearranged your current furniture in every possible combination. Surely there’s no way to further improve the layout, is there? Sometimes it’s worth taking another look.

Do you have a piece of furniture that no longer serves its intended purpose? Try to find a new purpose for it. Take it to a different room. Place books or vases on it. Spend some time finding an appropriate new use for it. If you don’t limit yourself to what something is “supposed” to be used for, you might be surprised what you come up with.

Easy

Modern decor is trending toward simplicity. So the irony is that you can really update a room just by removing stuff from it. It is not necessary to include additional items in each upgrade. Take a look around your house. Are some of your rooms too busy? By sticking to a theme and a few well-chosen focus points, you’ll be surprised at how refreshing a room can feel by minimalism.

Another advantage of simplifying a room is that it gives you more space. I have a friend who recently threw away a large media cabinet. It was actually blocking the light coming in from a window. Getting rid of it completely changed the atmosphere of her living room. It felt more open, less cluttered, and actually bigger than ever. Sometimes you just need to declutter your space to get the feel of redecorating.
